Inspiration for the film came after the co-producers, Loraine Blumenthal and Rob Mitchell, met in 2011 at a book-signing, with Tony Benn and Paul Stephenson.
The filmmakers discussed collaborating on a documentary film about the Bristol bus boycott.
This idea developed into pursuing a ‘mixed-race’, working-class Bristolian man going for the top job in the city, one generation after the boycott.
After a long journey, The Mayor’s Race film, directed by Loraine Blumenthal, was released in 2018 and has been seen by audiences around the world.
